herbert a. simon and the concept of rationality: Boundaries and procedures

چکیده
This paper discusses Herbert A. Simon’s conception of rationality in two of its principal general definitions: bounded rationality and procedural rationality. It ar‐ gues that the latter is the one that better synthesizes the author’s view about rational behavior and that the former fills mainly a critical function. They are complemen‐ tarily used by Simon in this sense. In spite of that, it is argued that it is the low degree of specificity of the concept of bounded rationality one of the reasons for its relatively greater success.

Rationality is a fundamental concept in economics. Most researchers will accept that human beings are not fully rational. Herbert Simon suggested that we are “bounded rational”. However, it is very difficult to quantify “bounded rationality”, and therefore it is difficult to pinpoint its impact to all those economic theories that depend on the assumption of full rationality. متن کاملRational Choice Theory: A Cultural Reconsideration
Economists have heralded the formulation of the expected utility theorem as a universal method of choice under uncertainty. In their seminal paper, Stigler and Becker (Stigler & Becker, 1977) declared that “human behavior can be explained by a generalized calculus of utility-maximizing behavior” (p.76). The universality of the rational choice theory has been widely criticized by psychologists, ...
متن کاملSystem Engineering, for a Cognitive Sciences Approach
This article proposes to throw some light on the strong relationship between Cognitive Science and System Engineering. In the same manner that Herbert Simon justified hierarchical organizations with the argument that individuals had “bounded rationality”, this article tries to show that most of our System Engineering processes are techniques to compensate for our cognitive boundaries. Practical...
متن کاملComputational intelligence in economics and finance: Carrying on the legacy of Herbert Simon
This is an editorial guide for the special issue on computational intelligence (CI) in economics and finance. A historical introduction to the background is given. This research paradigm is traced back to Herbert Simon, who, as a founder of artificial intelligence, pioneered the applications of AI to economics. The move from the classical AI to CI indicates a continuation of the legacy of Herbe...
